THE WEEK UNPEELED

Not a great week for the banks, it seems.  Moody’s downgraded five of the six largest banks in the US and a similar number overseas based on increased risk and lower profits, lending anything but support for choppy markets last week that saw the Dow lose about 1 percent to end Friday at 12,640.  (Banks did trade higher, though. Buy the fact?) Euro banks aren’t faring well either, with Spain and Italy in bailout cross-hairs. Moody’s since has been on the defense on such argument as why the industry as a whole and why so late. Elsewhere:

  • Google chief Larry Paige “lost his voice,” which caused some to scream (especially some headline writers:  WSJ: “What’s Ailing Google Chief?”); he also missed the company’s annual meeting, btw, so don’t we kinda have to speak up about, in a best-practice corporate comms speaking sort of way;
  • Microsoft unveiled a tablet last week, the first computer the company ever made;
  • Nokia announced it would slash 10,000 jobs by end of next year;
  • NBC news division suffered several media blows about its slumping viewership numbers amid reports that Anne Curry of “Today” will likely depart;
  • King James took home an NBA championship for the Heat; and
  • Artist LeRoy Neiman, known for his impressionistic paintings of sport figures, died. CJP

It was a dark and dismal computer screen on January 5th, 1995. People woke up, had their morning coffee, went to work and lived life in a happy, ignorant bliss of what was to come. Then, without warning, the pixelated display of a Windows 95 logo soaring over a blue-sky themed background burst into life. Excitement was abounding to a public wondering what innovations Microsoft would be introducing. Little did they know that the Pandora’s box in the guise of a Windows-based operating system would eventually be the death of all that is aesthetically pleasing in the world. For that day, my friends, Microsoft Bob was unveiled. Oh, what’s that? I’m sorry, you probably don’t recall Microsoft Bob, but that’s okay (there will be a pop quiz tomorrow). All you need to know is that it was with this application that the Font-Which-Must-Not-Be-Named was born. Curse you, Comic Sans. Oh, I’ve already said too much...

...But why stop now? My fate is already entwined in a timeless battle against a staunch, enduring and ugly foe. And while I’ve bravely armed myself to combat this treacherous foe, my defenses are not without limits. Bad typographic choices occasionally have a way of sneaking by with very ill-fated results. For example, July 8th, 2010 was a deeply unsettling day in for sports fans. There are those among us that may recall this as the day that LeBron James announced he would join the Miami Heat, and as such would be leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers. But the true anguish the sports world felt was not from LeBron’s decision, but instead because of the unfortunate letter written by the Cav’s majority owner, Dan Gilbert—in Comic Sans.

Miami Heat

Tonight is the first game of the NBA Finals and guess who couldn’t be more elated that my favorite team will be blazing the courts against the Dallas Mavericks?

Uh-huh, you guessed right.   If you know me, you  know that my team (even pre-Lebron) is the Miami Heat, but after a tough season of inconsistency and downright sloppiness, I’m wondering if that old adage “you’re only as strong as your weakest link,” holds true here.   And that weak link may very well be the leader, coach Erik Spoelstra.

There’s been much ado on the Internet regarding his coaching style and speculation around him being fired and former coach, current president Pat Riley stepping back in, which in my opinion may not be a bad idea.  But what do you think – how do you define leadership?  Well first, if you look at good old Merriam-Webster’s definition it’s “ a person that leads…”  Brilliant.

To me, a leader is someone who has a clear vision and can rally a group of people to work together to achieve that common goal.  The person is passionate, inspirational and people WANT to follow their direction.  As far as I can see Erik Spoelstra is not doing much when it comes to inspiring his players.   These men are talented, they can play, but during the regular season they were struggling  to win games and while they’ve beaten the Bulls (neh-neh-neh-neh-neh!), during the May 15 match-up against the Bulls they were dropping balls and tripping over themselves like middle school girls.
